KCOP CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF BROADCASTING

KCOP/UPN 13 celebrates 50 years on the air entertaining Los Angeles with a two-hour retrospective to air at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, and repeated at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. The station first signed on the air in 1948 with the call letters KLAC, later to be changed to KCOP by new owners in 1953. Channel 13 has been home to such diverse shows as "Boxing at the Olympic,’’ "Bozo the Clown,’’ "Passport to Travel,’’ "Polka Parade," "Romper Room,’’ "The Lloyd Thaxton Show,’’ "The Oscar Levant Show,’’ "Hobo Kelly,’’ "Life with Elizabeth’’ with Betty White, "The Leo Carrillo Show,’’ "Webster Webfoot’’ with Jimmy Weldon, teen dance shows with Bill Balance, Liberace, and veteran newsman Baxter Ward. The program features rare clips, interviews, and a re-creation of a "Life With Elizabeth" episode. This is a must-tape show for anyone who loves Los Angeles television and its early days.

KTTV/11 DELIVERS SCORCHING JULY VICTORY

KTTV/Fox 11delivers the summer’s hottest ratings, powering to a strong No. 1 with growth in primetime and late news during Nielsen’s July 1998 sweep.

For the first time in its history, Fox 11 News at 10 has won a July sweep, ranking No. 1 in Los Angeles Monday-Friday and Monday-Sunday. Monday-Friday, Fox 11 News at 10 scored a 4.5 rating/8 share, posting a +5% gain year-to-year. KTLA’s "News at 10’’ (4.3/8) dropped to second place in the market and lost –7% in rating. KCAL is third with a 3.26 and KCOP is fourth with a 1/4/2.

KTTV/FOX 11 is the only network station in Los Angeles to show growth in primetime ratings. KTTV is No. 1 on Monday nights with the combined strength of "Ally McBeal" and the return of "Melrose Place.’’ KTTV scores another victory on Tuesdays, showing the most growth year-to-year, up +22% in rating, bolstered by the move of "King of the Hill" to Tuesdays and the premiere of "Guinness World Records: Primetime.’’
