KTLA FIRST LOS ANGELES TELEVISION STATION TO ORIGINATE HDTV BROADCAST OF LOCAL SPORTS EVENT - DODGERS BASEBALL

(Los Angeles, August 13, 1999)  Continuing its tradition of technological firsts, KTLA Television will present two Los Angeles Dodgers baseball games in high definition television (HDTV) on KTLA-DT, Channel 31.  These will be the first broadcasts of a local sports event originated by a Los Angeles television station.  The Dodgers will take on the New York Mets in HDTV from Dodger Stadium on Friday and Saturday, September 10 and 11, both games at 7 p.m.

KTLA was the first station in Los Angeles to sign on its digital Channel 31 with the historic broadcast of John Glenn's shuttle launch in October 1998.  On January 1 of this year, KTLA HDTV cameras captured the vibrant colors, panoramic scenery and digital sound of its signature broadcast event, the Tournament of Roses Parade.

For the Dodgers broadcasts, KTLA will once again utilize state-of-the-art digital equipment including National Mobile Television's Digital High Definition Mobile Unit and Sony HDC-700 and HDC-750 cameras.  The games will be simulcast in HDTV and NTSC.  KTLA first utilized this simulcast during its historic HDTV telecast of the 1999 Rose Parade.

Digital TV (DTV) is a new broadcasting technology that uses digital signals instead of analog signals.  This offers the viewer an aspect ratio (16:9) with clearer, sharper images.  In addition, there is the possibility of more channels, Dolby 5.1 Channel sound and better reception.  KTLA uses the 1080-line interlace (1080I) format.

KTLA was the first commercial television station in Los Angeles when it signed on the air in 1947.  Since that milestone 52 years ago, the history of KTLA has become the history of Los Angeles broadcasting.

The broadcast pioneers at KTLA set the pace for the evolution of modern day broadcasting.  This resulted in a long list of technological firsts including the first television station to provide extended live news coverage and regularly operate a flying remote unit - the telecopter.  KTLA was also the first to regularly schedule a remote program; originate color programs; present a man-on-the street broadcast; and provide stereo broadcasting and Spanish language simulcasts, among others.

KTLA, Channel 5, is The WB affiliate in Los Angeles and a Tribune Broadcasting station.
