Los Angeles TV viewers in the "50s had many favorite shows, but at the top of the list was "Howdy Doody" on KNBH (and later KRCA) Channel 4. Baby boomers grew up with "Buffalo Bob" Smith, who died Thursday at age 80 of cancer.

Smith’s most recent appearances concerned the auction of some Howdy Doody memorabilia. The cowboy-suited host appeared in more than 2,500 shows spanning 13 years (1949-60). In later years, Smith was a popular figure on the college circuit as new generations found an appreciation for the man columnist Bob Greene said "may have been the most important cultural landmark for my generation.’’
