SAVVY TRAVELER COMES TO LA

Rudy Maxa, radio’s original Savvy Traveler (locally on KPCC/89.3 FM) also hosts a wonderful new TV series, “Smart Travels.”  It will be on KCET/28 and KOCE/50 eventually, but for now it’s on KLCS/58 at 5 p.m. Saturdays.  It’s terrific, and you can reference the series at the web site www.smarttravels.tv.  Check it out

PAT SAJAK WEB SITE

KENT SHOCKNEK RETURNS

The KCBS/2 ratings are up in the morning, thanks to the addition of former Channel 4 anchor Kent Shocknek  Look for Kent to do Special Assignments and other reporting as well.  His former anchormate, Kathy Vara, is now on KABC/7 at 11:30 a.m. weekdays.  The morning competition is tough—Kelly Mack’s sense of humor has certainly enlivened the KNBC early news.  We caught her one day drinking milk—maybe a new milk commercial star in the making?  The Channel 4 camaraderie is fun to watch, but those sometimes lengthy in-studio live interviews sometimes try our patience when the subject matter would work just as well as a taped feature story.

WEB SITE ON L.A. TV NEWS

There’s an excellent website on Los Angeles television news run by Ron Fineman.  He updates it Monday, Wednesday and Friday, has sections on letters and q&a interviews with local TV news folks, past and present.  Go to www.ronfineman.com

KTTV, KTLA, ETC

“Good Day LA” on KTTV/11 rules in the morning news wars at this writing.  Steve Edwards, one of our LA favorites, is the glue that holds it all together....”The KTLA Morning News” is still good, but we do miss Barbara Beck, and she’s been MIA since leaving the show suddenly in May.  Wonder what they’ll do for the 10th anniversary show.  Carlos Amezcua, you’re still the best!!!

LARRY McCORMICK  HONORED FOR 30 YEARS AT KTLA

Veteran KTLA newsman Larry McCormick was honored for 30 years of service to KTLA on Wednesday, May 30, at KTLA.  During the ceremony KTLA named one of their stages after him.  Here’s the press release:

KTLA’s Larry McCormick is truly the multi-faceted, multi-talented, media professional.  The first African-American anchorman in Los Angeles, Larry has done it all and done it well.  After a number of years as a highly popular radio personality in Los Angeles, Larry joined KTLA in 1971 as weatherman.  KTLA will recognize his 30th anniversary by dedicating its studio to him at a ceremony on May 30th.

In his 43 years in broadcasting, including 32 in television news, Larry has hosted musical programs of all kinds, radio and TV talk shows, TV games shows, football play-by-play, as well as writing, narrating and producing TV and radio documentaries.  In television news, Larry has been a weatherman, sportscaster, feature reporter and anchor.  He has been nominated for several Emmy Awards, and has been the recipient of a number of Golden Mike Awards.  In 1994, Larry won the prestigious “Governor’s Award,” the highest honor presented annually by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Not content to be a “media star,” Larry has always been very active in the Los Angeles community, generally, and the Los Angeles Black community especially, where he is considered to be a “leader” of considerable significance.  He has organized and/or emceed more than 1,740 programs in the greater Los Angeles community over the years.  He has also been a hard working member of numerous boards of directors of community organizations, as well as, professional organizations such as the Los Angeles Urban League and the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California.  Larry has been the recipient of 112 awards, citations and honors from government, civic and community organizations.

Today, Larry continues to bring integrity and vast news experience as co-anchor of KTLA’s “News at Ten:  Weekend Edition,” and weekday feature anchor for “News at Ten.”  He is also co-host of the highly lauded “Making It: Minority Success Stories” seen every Sunday morning at 6:30am.”
